With the Delaware shores being only a 2 ½ to 3 hour drive from Philadelphia and Washington, DC it has become a destination for retirees the last several years due to it’s beach lifestyle, beautiful new homes, tax benefits, and relaxed coastal settings.  Here are some of the most enticing reasons to consider Delaware for your 2nd or retirement home.

It’s Tax Friendly

Delaware is one of the few states in the United States that does not impose a sales tax. Additionally, Sussex County Delaware is tied for second among all U.S. counties for the lowest ratio of median annual property tax to home value.  In fact, Kiplinger Personal Finance Magazine named Delaware as one of the most tax-friendly states for retirees!  Learn about other ‘Tax Advantages’ in our other blog posting.

Location & Weather

Delaware boasts some of the best and cleanest beaches in the nation, including Rehoboth Beach, Bethany Beach, Lewes and Fenwick Island. Due to its location on the eastern seaboard, the Delaware shore does not generally experience the oppressive heat and humidity that some of the more southern beaches see each year.  In fact, Sussex County, located in the southern portion of the state, has a somewhat milder climate and a longer growing season than the northern area. Average temperatures in the Rehoboth Beach/Lewes area are Mid-eighties in the Summer, Mid-seventies in Fall and upper-forties degrees in Winter. Plus, it rarely snows.

Healthcare

When it comes to purchasing a permanent or secondary home in Delaware, one of the crucial factors to consider is the proximity to high-quality healthcare facilities. While the beach itself holds many therapeutic benefits, it's essential to have confidence that your health needs will be well taken care of by top-notch medical professionals. In addition to being within driving distance of some of the best hospitals on the East Coast, Delaware is home to a number of excellent healthcare facilities that provide comprehensive medical services to residents and visitors alike. These facilities are staffed with highly skilled and experienced healthcare professionals who are committed to providing the best possible care. In addition to the numerous healthcare options available throughout the state, Delaware is proud to have two award winning medical providers in BeeBe Healthcare and ChristianaCare

Water Access & Views

Delaware has approximately 25 miles of Ocean coastline, another 25 miles of Delaware Bay coastline, plus over 110 miles of inland bay shoreline. Beautiful sunrises and sunsets abound!

Lower Slower Delaware (LSD)

Coastal Delaware is known for its laid back, resort lifestyle, set to the backdrop of gorgeous natural scenery amidst protected parks and clean beaches, and perfectly paired with vibrant boardwalks, tax-free shopping and fine dining.
