Family Fun Day Trips in Delaware and Beyond

Family Fun Day Trips in Delaware and Beyond

  • 08/27/25

One of the best things about living here in Delaware—especially if you’re lucky enough to have kids or grandkids nearby—is all the fun we can have together. Whether it’s strolling the Rehoboth or Bethany boardwalks, checking out local festivals, or keeping up with what’s happening through the Cape Gazette and News Journal, there’s always something to do close to home.

But here’s the thing: living in Delaware also puts us in a great spot for easy day trips and weekend getaways. We’re right next to Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia, which means a whole world of new adventures is just a short drive away.

Let’s take a look at some of my favorite spots just over the Maryland border.

Love Camping? You’ll Love These Spots

If you enjoy camping—or even just spending a few days soaking up nature—check out Elk Neck State Park in Cecil County. It’s tucked between the Chesapeake Bay and the Elk River and offers 250 campsites plus cabins that sleep up to six people. You’ll find fire rings, grills, picnic tables, and even bathhouses to make things comfortable. And from Memorial Day through Labor Day, the park store is open for all your last-minute needs.

While you’re there, don’t miss the climb up to the lighthouse—it’s worth it for the incredible views of the water and surrounding landscape. There’s also a beach for swimming, and if you’re into kayaking or canoeing, you’ll find plenty of calm waters to explore.

Another great option is Tuckahoe State Park on the Eastern Shore. This spot is perfect if your crew loves hiking, biking, horseback riding, or fishing. They also have campsites and even offer day camp programs for kids—something to keep in mind for next summer! There’s a small camp store here too, open seasonally.

And if you’re already in Sussex County and want to mix in a little history, take a short trip to Berlin, Maryland—a charming town with a beautiful downtown full of shops and restaurants. While you’re in the area, you can camp at Assateague State Park, right on the ocean. Set up your RV or tent, enjoy a fire ring and picnic table, and watch the wild horses roam the island. Between swimming, surf fishing, kayaking on Sinepuxent Bay, and exploring nearby Ocean City, there’s no shortage of things to do.

Waterparks for Kids (and Kids at Heart!)

Closer to home, you probably know about Jungle Jim’s in Rehoboth and the Midway Speedway waterpark near Lewes (which also has Go-Karts—always a hit!). But if you’re looking for something a little different, head to Great Wolf Lodge in Perryville, Maryland.

This one’s a game-changer because it’s indoors—no worries about rain ruining your plans. It’s perfect for an overnight getaway too, thanks to the 700 on-site hotel rooms. And beyond the waterpark, there’s an aerial ropes course for adventurous teens and plenty of kid-friendly activities. Add in restaurants and food trucks, and you’ve got the makings of a fantastic mini-vacation.

A Can’t-Miss Aquarium Adventure

If your family loves sea life, the National Aquarium in Baltimore is absolutely worth the trip. It’s home to thousands of marine and amphibious animals spread across stunning exhibits that will wow kids and adults alike. From Sussex County, it’s about a 2.5-hour drive, and if you’re in Kent or New Castle County, you’ll shave some time off that.

Living in Delaware gives us so many local treasures, but every now and then, it’s fun to go explore what’s just beyond our borders. So pack a bag, load up the car, and go make some memories—you’ve got plenty of amazing options waiting for you.
