Fall Hiking Guide: Where to Enjoy Autumn Views in Delaware

You know that feeling when the first cool breeze finally hits in September? That's when I know it's time to get back on the trails. Fall in Delaware is absolutely perfect for hiking – the temperatures are just right, the air is crisp, and the leaves start putting on an amazing show. For me, it’s the best season to get outside, move around, and just hit the reset button.

What’s great is that you can share it with the people (and pets!) you love most. It’s such a good way to actually talk and connect with family or your partner without a million other distractions. Plus, seeing your dog have the time of their life on a new trail is always a bonus.

So, it's time to dust off your hiking boots, grab your favorite people (the two- and four-legged kind!), and go explore some of the awesome trails and state parks Delaware has to offer this season.

Alapocas Run State Park

Looking for a hike that feels like a real workout? Alapocas Run is your spot. The Alapocas Woods Trail is a go-to for many. It's a loop of nearly two miles that's awesome for both hiking and mountain biking. Be ready for some rugged parts – it’s a bit of a challenge, but the views of the fall colors and cool rock formations make it totally worth it.

White Clay Creek State Park

If you want to just get lost in the woods for a while (in a good way!), you have to check out White Clay Creek. This place is huge and has some amazing long trails that are perfect for a crisp fall afternoon. The Whitely Farms Trail is a big one, over seven miles, and you'll see everyone out there – hikers, bikers, people on horseback, and tons of happy dogs. If you're not up for a huge trek, the Chestnut Hill Trail gives you the same beautiful scenery on a shorter loop. Oh, and if you're into bird-watching or photography, bring your gear! The wildlife here is incredible.

Brandywine Creek State Park

There's something magical about seeing fall colors reflected in the water, and Brandywine Creek State Park is the place to see it. It's so peaceful. The Rocky Run Loop is a favorite, but honestly, it's usually quiet enough that you feel like you have the place to yourself. For the best views of the water, definitely take the Brandywine Creek River Loop – it follows the river for most of the way. The Eastern Loop is another great choice if you just want a quiet two-hour escape into nature.

Cape Henlopen State Park

Don't forget about the coast in the fall! Cape Henlopen has some incredible hikes. I absolutely love the Gordons Pond Trail. It's mostly flat, so it's super chill for a long walk or bike ride with your dog, and the coastal wildlife is just amazing to watch. The Walking Dunes Trail is another gem for spotting animals. The best part? You can easily wander off the path and take a walk on the beach. That autumn breeze coming off the ocean is just the best.

Lums Pond State Park

Lums Pond is another spot that's just gorgeous in the fall. The wetlands around the pond mean you'll see a ton of different wildlife. One little tip: even in the fall, it's a good idea to bring some bug spray, just in case! The Swamp Forest Trail wraps all the way around the pond and it's perfect for whatever you're in the mood for – a hike, a bike ride, or just a leisurely stroll with your dog while you soak in the views.
